How Long Is an International Driving Permit Valid? Validity, Expiry and Renewal
An International Driving Permit does not have one fixed lifespan. Its validity is capped by three separate things at once, and the shortest of them wins. Understanding which one binds in your case prevents the common mistake of buying three years of cover that a destination will only honour for one.
The three caps
- The Convention format your destination follows — one year under the 1949 Geneva Convention, up to three years under the 1968 Vienna Convention.
- Your national licence. An IDP is meaningless once the licence it translates has expired, so it can never outlast it.
- The validity you selected when ordering, which may be shorter than either of the above.
Start dates catch people out
Some permits run from the date of issue, others from a future start date you nominate. If you order months before a trip and the permit runs from issue, you may burn several months of validity before you ever leave. Where a future start date is offered, use it.
Equally, do not cut it fine at the other end. A permit that expires mid-trip is worse than no permit, because you may have already signed a rental contract on the strength of it.
Renewal
There is no true renewal process for an IDP — the document is not extended, it is reissued. You apply again with a current licence and a current photograph, and receive a new permit with a new validity period.
If your national licence was renewed or replaced since your last IDP, you must reapply using the new licence details. A permit that translates a licence number you no longer hold will not stand up to inspection.
If it expires while you are abroad
Stop driving on it. Depending on where you are, driving with an expired permit can be treated the same as driving without the required documentation, which typically means a fine and can invalidate your rental insurance — a far more expensive outcome than the fine.
A digital translation can be reissued quickly from anywhere, which is one practical advantage over a printed booklet posted from your home country. Check your destination's rules first so you know what will actually be accepted.
